The scope of the GraFOx Summer School on Oxide Semiconductors for Smart Electronic Devices

The GraFOx Summer School on Oxide Semiconductors for Smart Electronic Devices provides Ph.D. candidates and post-docs with the opportunity to have an in-depth looking into the dynamic field of oxide semiconductor materials research and applications. The program will combine fundamental tutorial lectures by leading experts together with specialized contributions from young researchers reporting on the latest developments on experimental investigations and methods as well as on theoretical calculation procedures in the field. In addition, participants will exchange their scientific results in a poster exhibition, which will be displayed all week and introducing discussions within the breaks.

The Summer School will take place from June 3−9, 2019 at the Centro Italo-Tedesco per l'Eccellenza Europea (Villa Vigoni), Loveno di Menaggio (CO), Lago di Como, Italia and is organized by the Leibniz ScienceCampus GraFOx (Growth and Fundamentals of Oxides for Electronic Applications).

The Summer School covers the following main topics:

In addition to the scientific program, the Summer School offers a conductive learning and discussion atmosphere. The Villa Vigoni complex, set within the Lake Como landscape, extends over 40 ha (100 acres) in Loveno di Menaggio. It includes two large classicistic villas with their historical gardens. Most of the Summer School activities will take place in Villa Mylius-Vigoni and Villa Garovaglio-Ricci, in beautiful historical rooms and a modern conference venue. Joint meals and social events will complete the scientific program and offer opportunities for exchange beyond scientific questions.

We look forward to meeting you in Menaggio!

Program

Each participating Ph.D. candidate/student will present at least one poster with her/his scientific results (size A1 portrait). In addition, he/she will give an appetizer talk on his poster as indicated (PXX: 2-3 slides, max. 5 min.). Furthermore, there are methodological talks (TXX: 15 – 30 min. incl. dicussion). Social Activities

Bellagio at the lake of Como

The Summer School includes two afternoons of organized social activities for enhancing the communication between the participants. One will be a boat trip on the lake Como within the triangle of Menaggio, Bellagio and Varenna. The other one will be a guided tour through the town of Como on the traces of the physicist Alessandro Volta, after whom the unit of the voltage and electrical potential is named. Villa Mylius-Vigoni and the park are open for a guided tour on the German-Italian culture and history of the villa exclusively for our participants. Even more scientific and social communication will occur during the breaks and during the joint meals.

Location

The GraFOx Summer School on Oxide Semiconductors for Smart Electronic Devices will be held in a unique ambient one usually doesn't get access to: The beautiful classicistic Villa Vigoni − Centro Italo-Tedesco per l'Eccellenza Europea, above the exceptional Lake Como, lovely embedded within the mountainside of the northern Italian alps. The Villa Vigoni Center consists of serval buildings, including the Villa Mylius-Vigoni und Villa Garovaglio-Ricci, both built up in the early 19th century. They are maintained in a very original way, including an enormous cultural heritage. The classical German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe resided there about 200 years ago. Directly attached to the villas you will find 40 ha (100 acres) of beautiful botanical garden.

Villa Vigoni

In the beginning of June the climate is typically moderate warm—not too hot, but already nice—also during the evening. Day temperatures are usually around 26 °C (78 °F) and night temperatures at 15 °C (59 °F). In any cases, please do not forget to bring sunscreen, hat, sun glasses, anti mosquito repellant, warm clothes if it might get chilly in the evening, walking shoes, and a pocket light (or a mobile phone with torch) for the nights. The electrical plugs in Italy are of types L, C, (F, E) (230 V~, 50 Hz): please care for your own adapter, if needed. Downtown Menaggio can be reached by a 20 min. walk and provides all necessary amenities (supermarket, ATM machines, laundries, pharmacies, etc.).

Travel

Map Lake Como Airports

The Villa Vigoni Center is located above the western banks of the Lake Como within the northern Italian alps. The closest airports are the international Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), the Milan Linate Airport (LIN), the Bergamo Orio al Serio International Airport (BGY), and Lugano Airport (LUG), the latter being located closeby within Switzerland. Nevertheless, the most conveniant airport with the highest frequency of flights is Milan-Malpensa (MXP). Public transportation is not easy from either of the four airports. Therefore, we have organized shuttle busses.

  • Shutte bus departure times:
Monday, June 3rd at 03:15 p.m. from MXP (meeting point will be announced soon)
Sunday, June 9th at 09:15 a.m. to MXP

In case you want to rent a car on your own, we want to give you the following helpful hints: All freeways in Italy are toll roads. Most of them you can pay cash in Euro (including freeways A4, A8, A9, A51, and A52; typically ~1€/10 km), but some of the freeways around Milan require special electronic registration, which is not available for rental cars—you should strikly avoid these freeways (A36, A59, and A60).

  • From Milan-Malpensa (MXP): Take routes SS336 and A8 towards Milano, then A9 in directions of Como/Chiasso (Svizzera) until exit Lago di Como, then SS340 towards Menaggio. Avoid freeway A36 and A59 as well as entering Switzerland; the swiss customs are directly behind the exit Lago di Como on A9. It takes you approx 1:30 to 2:00 hours, depending on traffic conditions.
  • From Milan-Linate (LIN): Take routes SP14 and A51 in direction Tangentiale Nord, then A52 in direction Tangentiale Nord, then A4 in direction Torino, then A8 in directions Varese/Como, then A9 in directions of Como/Chiasso (Svizzera) until exit Lago di Como, then SS340 towards Menaggio. Avoid freeways A36/A59 and entering Switzerland; the swiss customs are directly behind the exit Lago di Como on A9. It takes you approx 1:45 to 2:15 hours, depending on traffic conditions.
  • From Bergamo (BGY): Take routes SP116, then SP591, then SS671 in direction Milano, then A4 direction Milano/Torino, then A8 in directions Varese/Como, then A9 in directions of Como/Chiasso (Svizzera) until exit Lago di Como, then SS340 towards Menaggio. Avoid freeways A36/A59 and entering Switzerland; the swiss customs are directly behind the exit Lago di Como on A9. It takes you approx 1:40 to 2:15 hours, depending on traffic conditions.
  • From Lugano-Agno (LUG): Take the route from the Airport towards Lugano downtown. In Lugano take the Via Riviera and Strada di Gandria. You'll have to cross the Swiss/Italian border and clear customs. Take SS340 towards Menaggio. It will take you about 50 minutes to 1:10 hours, depending on traffic conditions. Make sure that you are allowed to cross the Swiss-Italian border with you rental car.

We do not recommend public transportation, but in case you want to give it a try, the following connections are available:

  • From Milan-Malpensa (MXP): Take the Malpensa-Express XP1 towards Milano-Cadorna until Saronno, then train R17 to Como Lago, bus C10 to Menaggio – Piazza Roma, and bus C13 to Loveno Superiore – Cappella del Sasso. The trip takes you about 3:00 to 4:00 hours.
  • From Milan-Linate (LIN): Take bus Autostradale to Milano Centrale railway station, then train RE10 towards Lugano until Como San Giovanni railway station, bus C10 to Menaggio – Piazza Roma, and bus C13 to Loveno Superiore – Cappella del Sasso. The trip takes you about 3:00 to 3:30 hours.
  • From Bergamo (BGY): Take bus Orioshuttle to Milano Centrale railway station, then train RE10 towards Lugano until Como San Giovanni railway station, bus C10 to Menaggio – Piazza Roma, and bus C13 to Loveno Superiore – Cappella del Sasso. The trip takes you about 3:30 to 4:00 hours.
  • From Lugano-Agno (LUG): Take tram S60 to Lugano train station, RE10 towards Milano-Centrale, crossing the Swiss-Italian border, until Como San Giovanni Railway Station, bus C10 to Menaggio – Piazza Roma, and bus C13 to Loveno Superiore – Cappella del Sasso. The trip typically takes you about 3:00 hours.

We strongly recommend not to take a taxi/cab: the prices are typically in the order of about € 200 or even more from each of the airports mentioned above.
